The branded display “Gift Card Mall” is designed as a compact in-store prepaid card destination that holds a wide range of card offerings (500+ in the US). This innovative program provides a turnkey solution for increasing customer traffic and basket size while delivering one of the store’s highest profits per square meter. The company also distributes prepaid telecom cards and open loop gift and debit cards while continuing to expand the gift card product categories and channels of distribution.
An important ingredient of the Blackhawk Technology organization is defining and staffing a dedicated software development organization within the BHN Engineering team. The intent is to hire Staff Systems Engineer who will report to the Director of Engineering. The development teams will be staffed with onsite and offshore resources, though it is critical that the role be based in our offices in Pleasanton.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:
- Responsible for design, development and delivery of complex, reliable and scalable solutions.
- Related technologies include: JBOSS, Linux, Java, J2EE, SQL, DB2, SOAP, XML.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Define, design and implement cutting-edge software and modify existing software to add features.
- Specify product internal/external interfaces.
- Contribute innovative ideas for components and system architecture.
- Contribute to the design, implementation and deployment of high performance services and web applications.
- Implement business-critical internal web application functionality.
- Work with Business Analysts to review business requirements, minimize ambiguity and incomplete requirements, identify opportunities for engaging business review throughout the solution development and provide technical leadership and advice as needed
- Participate as senior level member of an Engineering team.
- Contribute in the development of Statements of Work for vendor engagements, and oversee the delivery of technology solutions from vendors and consultants
- Ensure compliance with Enterprise Architecture specifications
- Ensure design and code reviews, analysis of code components and code coverage of Unit test cases
- Initiate requirements definition, hands-on lab debugging and interaction with version control and problem tracking systems.
- Responsible for the adoption of software architecture best practices like code reusability, pattern oriented architecture, coding standards, modularization of code, aspect oriented programming etc within the technology team
- Provide senior technical leadership and mentoring to all delivery team resources
Qualifications: The following are preferred or desired unless specifically stated:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Business Management or related discipline or equivalent work experience.
- Combined 8 + years demonstrated Information Technology experience with at least 5+ years in J2EE application development
- Excellent knowledge/experience Optimal J
- Very high technical competence, track record of strong coding and individual technical accomplishments
- Hands on knowledge of SOA and Web Services design patterns and practices
- Hands on implementation experience with J2EE technologies like Java Servlets, POJO, EJB 3.0, JMS, XML, SOAP, WSDL, JSP etc
- Hands on experience with Model Driven Architecture (MDA).
- Experience in the payments domain is preferred – knowledge of ISO 8583 is desirable.
- Hands on experience in performance tuning of systems is preferred.
- Excellent knowledge of relational database technologies with advanced capabilities in at least one industry grade relation database systems – DB2 UDB, SQL Server 2003,
- Demonstrated expertise in implementing solutions on J2EE application servers like Websphere, BEA Weblogic and Open Source alternatives like JBoss
- Excellent knowledge/experience with Open Source technologies and frameworks like Hibernate and Spring
- Experience with Open Source testing frameworks like JUnit and JMeter.
- Experience managing offshore resources
- Ability to meet tight deadlines
- Strong financial management skills
- Strong innovator who can continue to mature processes and technologies within the constraints of an early stage company
- A team player – experience working with multiple teams
- Retail and payments domain experience a plus.

- Information Technology and Business consulting experience is desired.
- Experience defining and assisting in build out of the deployment architecture for the platform being developed
- Experience in adoption and implementation of development methodology like RUP, Extreme Programming, Test Driven Development and Agile Model Driven Development
- Experience leading informal reviews of ideas and technical objectives within and across business units.
